alkalinity The acid-neutralising capacity of carbonates, bicarbonates and hydroxides in water. Total alkalinity is the total concentration of bases in water, expressed as mg/l of CaCO3. Determination of alkalinity is carried out by titration to two end points: first, by titrating with standard acid to a phenolphthalein endpoint, and second by titration to a methyl orange endpoint. The total amount of acid used in the titration, expressed as equivalent CaCO3, represents the total alkalinity. The amount of acid required to titrate to the phenolphthalein endpoint (ph 8.3), expressed as equivalent CaCO3, is the phenolphthalein alkalinity. 　
鹼度 中和酸性之能力，如水中的碳酸鹽、重碳酸鹽與氫氧化物。 總鹼度是水中鹼的總濃度，以 CaCO3 的 mg/l來表示。 鹼度的是藉由二個端點的滴定決定: 第一個，藉由以對甲基橘色的端點對phenolphthalein端點，與滴定的第二個的標準酸滴定。酸的總數量被用於滴定，表達如同等物 CaCO3，代表總鹼度。酸的數量需要滴定到phenolphthalein端點 (酸鹼度 8.3)，表達如同等物 CaCO3，是phenolphthalein鹼度。
