| 形態特徵 | 體長圓而側扁。頭大。吻長。眼大。主上頜骨延伸至眼睛中央下方。上頜具一列絨毛狀齒，最外齒較大；前半部有不規則的大犬齒。D. VII-I，9；A. II，8； P. 14； Ll. 28；Tr. 2/7；Pred.S. 5；GR. 5+15-16；HL.2.36-2.48；BD. 2.73-2.88 in SL；ED. 3.15-3.39；SnL. 4.89-5.57；IS. 5.41-5.75 all in HL。體側暗金黃色，背部偏紅，腹部偏鮮黃色且具藍色之短紋或斑點；吻部另具藍色紋。Apogon apogonoides為其同種異名。 |

| 棲所生態 | 主要棲息於礁石區的峭壁，也活動於受庇護的沿礁到外礁等水域，從淺平礁至深達50公尺處。白天停留在岩礁下方或洞穴內，晚上則外出覓食多毛類以及其它小型底棲無脊椎動物。通常成對或小群生活，偶而成群，是罕見的天竺鯛。 |

| 地理分布 | 分布於印度-西太平洋區，西起東非，東至菲律賓，北至臺灣、日本，南迄澳洲北部。臺灣主要分布於南部、小琉球及澎湖等海域。 |
