Characteristic Dorsal fin with XI-XIII spines and 11-12 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 5-6 soft rays; pectoral fin with 18-20 soft rays; lateral line scales 49-54; gill rakers 7-9+23-27; vertebras 10+15. Closely related to S. marmoratus, but differs in having usually 19 pectoral rays, thin unbranched pectoral rays, a larger number of gill rakers, and a pinkish body, sometimes with greenish markings on dorsal part of head.
habitats Inhabits demersal marine environment, found in the sublittoral zone, on rock bottom. Viviparous. Attains about 37 cm SL. This species was described as new by Barsukov and Chen (1978). It was said that the specimens were a deep sea type of S. marmoratus 
Distribution Western Pacific: Miyagi Prefecture in Japan to the East China Sea and the southern Korean Peninsula. Also a first record in Indonesian waters.
