Characteristic Dorsal fin with XI spines and 12-14 soft rays; anal fin with IV spines and 8-9 soft rays. Only species of Neoniphon that has yellow body stripes, 3.5 instead of 2.5 scale rows above the lateral line, and a last dorsal spine that is shorter than the second to the last one.
habitats Confined to outer reef slopes. Rarely occurring in in less than 40 m depth, in current prone areas. 
Distribution Indo-Pacific: Mauritius, Reunion, and the Comoros; southern Japan, Indonesia, Australia, American Samoa, Hawaii, Marquesan Islands. Guam in Micronesia.
