Characteristic Head moderately small, pointed. Snout short, protractile. Eye large, interorbital space broad. Mouth small, superior, lower jaw longer than upper; barbels absent. Body elongated, slender, slightly compressed, belly rounded; dorsal profile slightly arched; caudal peduncle slender. Scales moderately large, cycloid, lateral line complete. L.l.:35-38; dorsal fin rays:3+7; pectoral fin rays:1+12-14; pelvic fin rays:1+7-9; anal fin rays:3+6. Dorsal fin origin above pelvic fin origin; pectoral fin end distant from pelvic fin origin; pectoral and pelvic fins at lower side of body; caudal fin forked. Grayish dorsally, silvery white ventrally. Distal margin of scales dark. Sexually dichromatic, a conspicuously dark stripe on side of female and the young from snout tip to caudal peduncle end, absent in male.
