Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays VII+I, 8; anal-fin rays II, 15-17; pectoral-fin rays14. Variable species in relation to habitat. Vertical orange lines on sides; oblique brown bar below eye; large black spot at base of caudal fin. The spot is usually large and round in adults and maybe absent during spawning time. Yellow snout with blue lines.
habitats Found in sheltered bays and lagoon patch reefs, typically forming dense aggregations at the entrance of caves and among branching corals. Nocturnal species. Feeds on zooplankton and other small benthic invertebrates. 
Distribution Indo-Pacific: Red Sea and east coast of Africa, eastward to the Marshall Islands, Samoa and Tonga; north to Ryukyu Islands; south to northern Australia.
