Minute teeth in a very narrow band on upper jaw, in a single irregular series on lower jaw, in a arrow-shaped patch on vomer, in a long and slender band on palatines and tongue. Opercular membrane smooth. Predorsal scales extend forward to anterior margin of eye. Pectoral fin long, its tip extends to behind orgin of second dorsal fin. Bluish green above, silvery white below; moderate black blotch on margin of opercle near upper edge; caudal fin red; spinous dorsal and second dorsal-fin lobe sometimes dark, anal and pelvic fins pale dusky to white.
habitats A deep-water, schooling species taken in depths of 100 to 300 m, but usually below 150 m. Feeds primarily on smaller planktonic invertebrates. 
Distribution Broadly distributed in tropical and subtropical waters of Indo-West Pacific. It is frequently found in all Taiwanese waters. 
Utility Food fish; marketed fresh.
