Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays XII-XIII,18-20; anal-fin rays III, 7-8; pectoral-fin rays17. Chin with 6 pores and no median pit containing a pore on each side; chin naked, frequently swollen with age; no antrorse spine; swimbladder without horn-like extensions anteriorly. Horizontal or diagonal bands occurs on both juvenile and adult; numbers increase by age; adult with about 20 black diagonal bands on back. Fins yellow with black spots.
habitats Found in deep inner to outer reef habitats. Occurs singly or in aggregations along coral slopes of clear lagoon and seaward reefs. Juvenile solitary on shallow protected reefs. Feeds on benthic invertebrates in open sand flats and seagrass beds at night.  
Distribution Indo-West Pacific: Ryukyu Islands south to Micronesia, Philippines and Indonesia. Taiwan: South, Penghu, Lanyu, Lyudao, East.  
Utility Commercial fishery and aquarium species.
