Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 14-16; Anal rays II, 13-16; pectoral rays 18-20; lateral-line scales 18-20; body depth 1.5-1.8 in standard length; posterior tip of dorsal fin pointed; caudal lobes pointed; no scales on infraorbitals. Body white to light yellow with 6-7 broad dark grey bars on side; a black spot at top of caudal fin base.
habitats Inhabits rocky lagoons, reef flat shorelines and piers subject to mild surge; juveniles are common in tide pools. Occasionally forms schools. Feeds on algae, crustaceans and other invertebrates during the day. Highly territorial. 
Distribution Widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific from Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian and Pitcairn Islands, north to Japan, south to Australia. It is a very common species in Taiwan except western part. 
Utility No commercial value. Utilized as a food fish by the Hawaiians.
