Characteristic	Dorsal rays XII, 12-14; Anal rays II, 12-14; pectoral rays 15-17; lateral-line scales 12-14; body depth 1.8-2.1 in standard length. 2 spinous procurrent rays on upper and lower orgins of caudal fin. Overall color is dark brown, bluish grey ventrally, with a broad white bar on caudal peduncle, ofter edged anteriorly with black; a prominent black spot covering pectoral-fin base and axil; caudal fin grey.
habitats	Inhabits steep outer reef slopes with rich coral growth. Occurs singly or in small groups and remains close to shelter, often at the entrance of large caves or near its ceiling.
Distribution	Distributede in the Indo-West Pacific from Maldives and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean to Fiji, north to Taiwan and the Philippines south to Vanuatu; Palau (Belau) in Micronesia. It is found in southern Taiwanese waters.
