Characteristic Dorsal rays XII, 12-13; Anal rays II, 11-12; pectoral rays 16-18; lateral-line scales 16-18; body depth 1.9-2.0 in standard length. 2 spinous procurrent rays on upper and lower orgins of caudal fin. Body dark brown, nearly black, with caudal peduncle and caudal fin abruptly white. Its caudal fin lobes end in two filaments. A black spot is at the base of the pectoral fin. Dorsal fin spine tips blue.
habitats Usually seen singly or in small groups on coastal reefs from 2 to 20m depth, amongst mixed algae-coral reef or rocky reefs. Found on exposed seaward reefs; less abundant in lagoons and channels. Feeds on zooplankton. 
Distribution Distributed in the Pacific Ocean from Christmas Island and northwestern Australia in the eastern Indian Ocean to as far east as the Line and Tuamoto Islands, north to Japan. It is a common species in Taiwan except weastern part. 
Utility No commercial value.
