Characteristic Dorsal rays XII, 14-17; Anal rays II, 12-14; pectoral rays 18-20; lateral-line scales 18-20; body depth 1.9-2.0 times in standard length. Upper and lower accessory caudal rays not spinous. Posterior margin of preopercle serrated, subopercle smooth. Both jaws with uniserial teeth. Upper and lower lobes of caudal fin without filamentous posterior rays. Adults generally brown; dorsal part of head and nape darker, grading to tan on lower part of head and breast; scales with darker brown margins; lips whitish; suborbital mostly blue; preopercle and opercle scales with blue centers; a well-defined dark brown or blackish spot at base of posteriormost dorsal rays.
habitats Inhabits reef flats and lagoon reefs. Frequently occurs in colonies associated with live or dead branching staghorn coral. Feeds on algae, gastropods, sponges, and copepods. Territorial, maintains and 'weeds' filamentous algae patches growing on dead cora
