Characteristic Separated dorsal fins; first dorsal fin with VIII-IX spiョes  second dorsal fin with 10 soft rays; fin with II spines and 8 soft rays. Gill rakers 6-8 + 13-15 on first gill arch lateral-line scales 69-76. Body brown in color (may also be dusky bluish grey to almost black, caudal peduncle with saddle-like yellow spot; large ocellated black spot on spinous dorsal. Standard length is 3.5-3.9 times of body deep.
habitats Inhabit in steep slop of coral reef area with 4-50m depth. Stay in cave and crevice. Nocturnal species. Produces the skin toxin grammistin when threatened. 
Distribution Indo-Pacific: East Africa to Samoa, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to New Caledonia; throughout Micronesia. South Taiwan. 
Utility No for food due to it's poisonous.
