Characteristic Dorsal spines: X, dorsal soft rays: 15-17, the seventh to tenth longest; anal spines: III; anal soft rays: 7-8; caudal fin lunate, edge of caudal fin elongate as silament in male. Lateral line continuing, lateral scales series 45-52. Body back reddish purple, abdomen pale. Males develop an incomplete crimson bar in the middle side. Caudal fin purplish on the edge in male, reddish in female.
habitats Mostly found on open substrate with low reef and remote bommies in depths over 20 m. Juveniles may, be shallow in coastal reefs. Form small, loose aggregations along current-swept drop-offs. 
Distribution Indo-Pacific: East Africa to Samoa and the Line Islands, north to southern Japan, south to the Great Barrier Reef; Palau, Marshall and Mariana islands in Micronesia. 
Utility Small perchlet, not commercial food species, ornate species feed as aquarium species.
