Characteristic Dorsal fin continuing, with X,spines and 15-17 rays, the 5th to 10th almost the same length; anal fin with III spines and 7-8 rays; pelvic fin abdomen; pectoral rays 16-19; caudal fin emarginate. Lateral line continuing, lateral line scales 48-52. Body purplish white, soft rays yellowish in male.
habitats More common at oceanic islands than on continental reefs. Occurs in large groups around coral outcrops and caves of outer reef slopes. Feeds on copepods and other planktonic crustaceans or crustacean larvae and fish eggs. 
Distribution Pacific Ocean: Bali and the Ryukyu Islands to the Tuamoto Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Australia and New Caledonia; throughout Micronesia. 
Utility Small perchlet, not commercial food species, but aquarium species.
