Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays VII-I, 9; anal-fin rays II, 7-8; pectoral-fin rays 14-15. Body plain dark brown to black, showing a lined pattern occasionally when caught or in juveniles; median stripe on body dusky; black pigments at dorsal fin base; fin transparent to whitish; lateral line complete; palatine teeth absent; silvery or black bioluminous band along ventral side from hyal region to anal fin origin.
habitats A rare species found in lagoons, among the spines of Acanthaster planci, in groups of up to 31 from depths of 7 m or more. Feeds on zooplankton and other small benthic invertebrates. 
Distribution Western Pacific: Sumatra, south Taiwan, and the Marshall Islands.
