threshold A point or level at which new properties emerge in an ecological, economic, or other system, invalidating predictions based on mathematical relationships that apply at lower levels. For example, species diversity of a landscape may decline steadily with increasing habitat degradation to a certain point, then fall sharply after a critical threshold of degradation is reached.　
臨界點，閥值 指新特性出現於生態的、經濟的或其它系統中的時間點或程度，該臨界值以上的情形無法再藉既有之數學公式預測。
