bycatch Species taken incidentally in a fishery; bycatch species may be of lesser value than the target species, and are often discarded. Some bycatch species are of commercial value and are retained for sale. Bycatch often consists of the juveniles of commercial species, and their loss has a deleterious impact on the overall yield obtained from a certain area.
