biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) The amount of oxygen consumed by respiratory processes measured in a bottle of water incubated in the dark at constant temperature for a specific time. Standard BOD determinators are for 5-day incubations at 20°C. It should always be stated whether a water sample had been filtered (soluble BOD) or not (total BOD). The biochemical oxygen demand is often wrongly reported as biological oxygen demand. 　
生化需氧量 (BOD) 指水中有機物在需氧菌作用下進行氧化分解所耗的氧量，以毫克/ 升表示。有機物含量越高，生化需氧量越大。故可間接評量水質受有機物污染指標。
