Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays IV-V, 23-26 ; anal-fin rays III, 19-22 ; pectoral-fin rays 14-16. A dense patch of bristle-like setae posteriorly on side of body, becoming more prominent with growtn; dorsal fin very elevated caudal fin truncate. Body bright yellow, sheath of caudal pedunelar spine white; a tilted horizontal band may showed denser yellow on side of body.
habitats An inshore coral-reef species that browses on filamentous algae from hard surfaces. A popular aquarium fish and the top marine fish export from Hawaii. Group spawning and pair-spawning by territorial males that court passing females were observed. 
Distribution Pacific Ocean: Ryukyu, Mariana, Marshall, Marcus, Wake and Hawaiian islands. Taiwan: South, Lanyuy, Lyudao.
