Characteristic HL 7.5-7.8, DGO 14.4-17.7, TR 2.9-3.0 in TL, Vert 140-143. Body can attain great lengths. Brownish body, with many large irregular dark-brownish splotches, separated from each other by a paler net-like pattern; lower jaw and abdomen paler; blackish corners of mouth and gill openings.
habitats Found in lagoon and seaward reefs. Juveniles more secretive and occur on intertidal pool. It feeds primarily on fishes. This is the most heavy Indo-Pacific moray species. Older and giant individual often ciguatoxic. 
Distribution Indo-Pacific: Red Sea and East Africa, north to the Ryukyu and Hawaiian islands, south to the Austral Islands, throughout Micronesia.
