Characteristic Body cylindrical. Eyes developed at the top of head. Snout shorter than eye diameter; mouth very oblique. Scales present on procurrent caudal-fin rays. Dorsal fin with 12-13 rays; anal-fin rays 15 to 17; length of anal-fin base longer than dorsal-fin base; Pectoral fins not extending to a line from pelvic-fin origin to dorsal-fin origin; caudal fin forked. Body with alternating narrow dark-edged pale blue and yellow stripes; oblique black spot at the upper end of the gill opening.
habitats A benthic species, occurring on soft bottoms in estuaries, bays and coastal waters in depths to 200 m. Rest on or more often burrow into substrate, leaving eyes exposed. When disturbed, it may swim a short distance but quickly buries itself again. Feed on 
Distribution Worldwide in tropical and warm temperate waters with the exception of the eastern Pacific and the northeast Atlantic north of Cape Blanc, Africa. It is a common species in Taiwan except eastern part.
