Characteristic Dorsal fin with XII-XIII spines and 12-14 soft rays; anal fin with IV spines and 10-12 rays, pectoral fin with 16-17 soft rays; lateral line 28-30; gill rakers 7-10+12-14=20-23. Body red, eye big, fins reddish white. Last dorsal spine longer than the penulatimate one and applied to 1st dorsal ray. Space between last dorsal spine and 1st dorsal ray about 1/2 the space between the last 2 dorsal spines. Infroprbital bone height below eye center about 1/2 of eye diameter.
habitats Found in the sublittoral zone. Biggest body length is 15cm. Inhabit 30m deep ocean. 
Distribution Indo-West Pacific: southern Japan to the Andaman Islands, and Australia. Also known from Fiji and Tuvalu. 
Utility Commercial food species, edible.
