Characteristic Body moderately slender, depth usually 24 to 30% of standard length; abdomen keeled with prepelvic and postpelvic scutes; Total number scutes 32 to 34. Two supramaxillae present; second symmetrical, paddle-shaped. Lower gill rakers on first gill arch 45 to 59. Vertical striae on scales not meeting at center, numerous small perforations on hind part of scale. Lateral-line scales 43 to 47. Body back blue-green above and silvery on flanks, separated by a golden mid-lateral line down flank;head golden; dorsal and caudal fin margins dusky; a dark spot at dorsal fin origin.
habitats Forms schools in coastal waters. Feeds on phytoplankton and zooplankton. 
Distribution Distributed in Indo-West Pacific from East African coasts and Madagascar eastward to Indonesia. Also in the Persian Gulf, but not in the Red Sea; north to Taiwan and Korea; south to the Arafura Sea and northern Australia. It is common in waters around Tai 
Utility Marketed fresh, dried-salted, boiled or made into fish balls.
