Characteristic Body moderately slender, depth usually 28 to 37% of standard length; abdomen with sharply-keeled prepelvic and postpelvic scutes ; total scutes 31 or 32. Vertical striae on scales not meeting at center. Lower gill rakers 88 to 126. Pelvic fins with i unbranched and 7 branched soft rays. Body dorsum blue-green, flanks silvery; no dark spot at dorsal-fin origin.
habitats Forms schools in coastal waters. 
Distribution Distributed in Western Indian Ocean from western coasts of southern India, from Bombay south to Sri Lanka; also to Madagascar and Mauritius, and Northwest Pacific in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Viet Nam. It very rare and only found in southern Taiwanese waters 
Utility Marketed fresh, dried, dried-salted, as bait, or made into fish meals.
