Characteristic Body elongate, cylindrical; abdomen rounded, without prepelvic or postpelvic scutes, but a W-shaped pelvic scute present. Lower gill rakers very variable. Branchiostegal rays 6 or mostly 7. With 42 to 48 scales in lateral series; vertical striae on scales not meeting at centre. A bright silver band along the entire flanks.
habitats Usually an inshore schooling species, inhabiting relatively clear waters of coastal, lagoon, and seaward reefs. 
Distribution Widely distributed in Indo-Pacific from Red Sea, east to Samoa and the Tuamoto Islands, north to Japan, south to southeastern and western Australia. It is common in waters around Taiwan. 
Utility Marketed fresh or dried-salted. Used as bait in the tuna fishery.
