Characteristic A moderately large herring-like fish; body moderately deep, compressed, abdomen with 31 or 32 fairly sharply-keeled scutes; pelvic scute with ascending arms. Head large; a median notch in upper jaw, which distinguishes it from other similar clupeids. No fleshy outgrowths on posterior margin of gill opening. Opercle smooth without bony striae. Gill rakers fine and numerous, 80 to 250 on lower part of arch. Scales moderate, 42 to 45 in lateral series, without perforations posteriorly. A dark blotch behind gill opening and a series of spots along flanks.
habitats Schooling in coastal waters and ascending rivers to breed. 
Distribution Only distributed in China and possibly southward into South China Sea, but records uncertain. Eastern Indian Ocean: two specimens collected from Phuket Island, Andaman Sea. It has found in western Penghu Is. before. 
Utility Marketed fresh, dried, dried-salted. Used as bait in the tuna fishery.
