Characteristic Body typically slender and elongate, without scales, encased in a series of bony rings. Snout slender and longer, its length 16-2.0 in HL. Superior trunk and tail ridges discontinuous; inferior trunk and tail ridges continuous; lateral trunk ridge confluent ends near anal ring. Median dorsal snout ridge low, entire; without lateral spines on snout; opercle ridge often prominent and complete in early juveniles, typically incomplete or vestigial in subadult-adult; scutella without longitudinal keels. Rings 18-20 + 38-46, darsal-fin rays 30-47, pectoral-fin rays 12-13. Mainly brownish, usually mottled with pale.
habitats Common in estuaries and in association with Zostera and other vegetation. Juveniles associate with drifting seaweed. 
Distribution Distributed in Gult of Tongking, northward to the vicinity of Vladivostok, including Taiwan, the Ryukyu Is. and the main islands of Japan. It is found in northern Taiwanese waters. 
Utility Used in Chinese medicine
