Characteristic Body elongate, ribbon-like, compressed; body depth gradually decreasing from head to caudal peduncle. Head moderately small. Snout length longer eye diameter. Pointed teeth on jaws, vomer, and palatines. Scales present in juveniles; absent in adult. Dorsal fin very long, extending along entire body length to tail, with 164-190 rays; anterior dorsal-fin rays elongate in juveniles, reduced in adult; anal fin absent; pelvic fins with 8-13 rays, elongate in juveniles, and absent in adult; caudal fin with 2 lobes; upper lobe sometimes upturned, conspicuous, and fan-like. Head and body usually silver.
habitats Mesopelagic fishes, sometimes drifting to coastal regions; very little is known of their habits and reproductive ecology. 
Distribution Found in Northwest Pacific from Japan to Taiwan. It very rare and only found in eastern and northern Taiwanese waters. 
Utility No commercial importance.
