Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays IX,27-30 ; anal-fin rays III,25-28 ; pectoral-fin rays16. Upper 3/4 of body bright yellow with black-edged, narrow, bright blue stripes; lower 1/4 of body bluish white. Erectile spine on each side of caudal peduncle sharp, strong, forward-pointing. Upper part of head with yellow, oblique stripes. Pectoral fins pale with dusky rays; pelvics light yellowish brown with black outer margin; vertical markings in caudal fin. first gill arch with gill rakers 14-16 on upper limb, 13-15 lower limb. Minute scales.
habitats Adults usually form schools and commonly found in shallow reef-gutters. Juveniles solitary and secretive on shallow rubble habitats. The large males control well-defined feeding territories and harems of females. The species almost continually in motion.  
Distribution Indo-Pacific: eastern Africa to the Hawaiian, Marquesan and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan, south to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia; throughout Micronesia. Taiwan: South, Hsiaoliuchiu, Penghu, Lanyu, Lyudao, North, East, North-East.
