Body dark brown without lines on body or spots on head; horizontal black band behind upper gill opening absent on juveniles; elongate purple band may be present anterior to dorsal origin; caudal fin brown; outer third of pectoral fin pale.
habitats The species is sometimes poisonous. Usually seen on sandy bottom near coral reefs or rocky bottom where it grazes on the surface algae by ingesting sand. 
Distribution Indo-West Pacific: East Africa to Tuamotu Islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to southern Great Barrier Reef. Mascarene, Line and Society Islands Taiwan: South, Lanyu, East.
