Characteristic	Dorsal-fin rays VI-VII, 26-28 ; anal-fin rays II, 26-28 ; pectoral-fin rays 16-18 ; pelvic-fin rays I,3. Forehead without rostral prominence even in adults. Two small candal peduncular plates each with a sharp, approximately semicircular, laterally projecting keel. Caudal fin emarginate without a filament. Body pale gray to gray-brown with numerous small dark gray spots on head and body except ventrally; an irregular dark gray line fallowing lateral line; juveniles and subadults with fewer and relatively larger spots, some of which joined to form short irregular lines.
habitats	A deep water species rarely seen by divers in less than 20m depth along steep reef walls, and the usual depth range reported is 40-100m, also occurs in scuba-diving depths in the cooler sea of the Northwestern Hawaiian Island.
Distribution	Pacific Ocean: southern Japan and the Hawaiian Islands. Taiwan: South, Hsiaoliuchiu.
