Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays VI-I, 9; anal-fin rays II, 8; pectoral-fin rays 14. Body nearally rhombic. Preopercle and suborbitals serrated. Maxillary reaching to the middle of eye. Body color brownish with a blackish-brown horizontal stripe from snout to caudal; a large blotch at caudal base; the membrane of the first three spines of the first dorsal blackish; soft dorsal and anal fins each with a row of brownish spots in parallel with bases.
habitats Occurs in clear water lagoon patch reefs and seaward reefs from the lower surge zone to a depth of 45 m. Generally found singly in crevices. Feeds at night on small benthic and free-swimming crustaceans. 
Distribution Indo-Pacific: Red Sea south to Algoa Bay, South Africa and east to the Line, Marquesan, and Pitcairn islands, north to southern Japan and the Hawaiian Islands, south to New Zealand and Rapa; throughout Micronesia.
