Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays VIII-I, 9; anal-fin rays II, 8; pectoral-fin rays 12-13. Body brown with 6 to 8 pale bars and 3 to 4 dark bands radiating from the eye; no large canine-like teeth on either jaw; palatine with teeth; no black ocellus on upper part of opercle; lateral line incomplete, reach only 2nd dorsal fin; fins marbled red; caudal fin rounded.
habitats Occurs inshore in reef areas among Acropora corals. Feeds on zooplankton and other small benthic invertebrates. 
Distribution Indo-Pacific: Red Sea, Mauritius and Rodriguez to the Line Islands and Tonga, north to the Philippines, south to northern Australia, New Caledonia and the Loyalty Islands.
