Characteristic Body moderately depressed. Preopercular spine with processes on both inner and outer sides. Almost all dorsal-fin soft rays brached, 8 divided rays in the second dorsal fin, the fin with a distinct horizontal pattern of lines in adults, first dorsal fin spine long filaments in male; in last anal-fin soft rays brached; pelvic spine and 1st pelvic ray fused into an elongate rod, separated from the other pelvic rays. Body brown scattered with darh blotches on head, body and fins.
habitats Lives on sand-weed bottoms. Inhabits protected sand and mud flats and slopes at depths of 1 to 55 m; also include estuaries and deep water. 
Distribution Distributed in Japan to northwestern Australia. It is found in sputhern and northern Taiwanese waters, and Penghu Islands. 
Utility Aquarium fishes.
