Characteristic Body oval, deep, strongly compressed. Head length roughly equal to head height; preopercle smooth, without prominent spines. Snout short. Small protractile mouth with brush-like teeth in the jaws. Dorsal fin with XIV spines, no notch between spinous and soft dorsal fin; and 17 or 18 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 15 or 16 soft rays; pectoral fins transparent with 13 to 15 soft rays; pelvic fins with I stout spine and 5 branched rays; caudal fin rounded. Bright yellow to orange-yellow with a big black blotch on the upper posterior portion of the trunk and a vertical black bar running through the eye.
habitats In coastal reef slopes rich with hydroids and anemones at depths of 3 to 20 m. Small juveniles secretive in coral thickets. Usually solitary and relatively uncommon. Feed on coral polyps and invertebrates. Oviparous. 
Distribution Distributed from the eastern Indian Ocean eastward throughout the Indo-Malayan region to Tonga, northward to southern Japan, southward to Lord Howe Island. Widely around coral reefs in Taiwan. 
Utility Marine aquarium fish.
