Characteristic Body oval, deep, strongly compressed. Snout remarkably protruding anteriorly like a rod; preopercle smooth, without prominent spines. Small protractile mouth with brush-like teeth in the jaws. Dorsal fin with IX spines, no notch between spinous and soft dorsal fin; and 28 to 30 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 19 to 21 soft rays; pectoral fins transparent with 14 to 15 soft rays; pelvic fins with I stout spine and 5 branched rays; caudal fin rounded. Overall white with three orange bars and an occellated black spot at base of soft portion of dorsal fin; soft portion of dorsal and anal fins yellow orange; a dark-edged orange bar through eye and narrow blue-edged brown and orange bar across base of caudal fin.
habitats Inhabits coral reefs at depths of 3 to 20 m; also in estuaries and silty inner reefs. Feeds on crabs, worms, and other invertebrates; usually in pairs. Territorial species. 
Distribution Distributed from the Andaman Sea eastward throughout the Indo-Malayan region, northward to southern Japan and southward to the Great Barrier Reef. It is found in Penghu Is.. 
Utility Marine aquarium fish.
