Characteristic Body elongate, slightly compressed. Eyes large. Mouth large, oblique; maxilla extending posteriorly to below eye. Premaxilla with notch near tip; premaxilla and dentary with at least 2 rows of teeth; inner row of long, depressible, needle-like teeth; outer row of shorter fixed teeth. Teeth present on vomer but not on palatines. First gill arch with 10 to 11 on lower limb. Two dorsal fins; first dorsal fin with V or VI spines; second dorsal fin long, with 19 to 21 soft rays; anal fin spineless, similar in length and shape to second dorsal fin, with 17 to 19 soft rays; caudal fin forked. Body covered with small, rough, non-overlapping scales, but abdomen scaleless; ventral side of lower jaw and around transverse rows of sensory pores with scaleless. Body brownish dorsally; lateral and ventral parts tan or silvery, with dark spots along midline.
habitats Found on continental shelves at depths of 200-400m. 
Distribution Distributed in the Western Pacific from southern Japan, the Yellow Sea to eastern Australia. Reported from the Chesterfield Islands. It is found in western, southern and northeastern Taiwanese waters. 
Utility No commercial value.
