Characteristic Body not elongate, its depth contained 5 to 8 times in standard length. Jaws broad, the lower projecting beyond the upper. First dorsal fin replaced by a transversal, laminated, oval cephalic disc with 24 to 28 laminae; second dorsal fin and anal fin long, lacking spines, the anal fin with 24 to 26 soft rays; pectoral fins rounded; caudal fin forked in young, becoming emarginate in adults. Total gill rakers on first gill arch 17 to 20. Body uniformly grey.
habitats Oceanic, mostly in warm seas. Attaches itself only to whales and porpoises. One adult couple was recorded attached to the same individual spinner dolphin for a period of about 3 months. A common associate of spinner dolphins at Fernando de Noronha Archipe 
Distribution Worldwide in tropical and warm waters. It is common in waters around Taiwan. 
Utility No commercial value.
