Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays XI, 14; anal-fin rays III, 9 ; pectoral-fin rays19. Body with 4 - 5 longitudinal dark stripes, sometimes with 1 vertical dark band on caudal peduncle. Apparent procumbent spinelike process. No scales on maxilla. Ten chin pores, often slitlike pores posteriorly. Poorly developed papillae and barbels on the fleshy lower lip. No dark margin on dorsal, caudal and anal fins.
habitats Occurs in sandy or muddy areas in coastal waters. Feed on benthic invertebrates abd fishes. 
Distribution Western Pacific: southern Japan, East and South China Sea, Taiwan and northwestern Australia; including the Philippines. Taiwan: West.  
Utility Commercial fishery and aquarium species.
