Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays XIII, 17; anal-fin rays III, 7; pectoral-fin rays17. Body depth 2.5 to 2.7 times in standard length. Body deeper with growth, loose the lower stripe and develop a cream-colored belly. Juvenile is orange with broad black stripe, one running mid-laterally and the other along upper sides at about 10 cm. Adults mainly grey with black fin markings.
habitats Found in clear lagoon and seaward reefs. Juveniles in shallow turbid coastal areas. Adults usually solitary, occasionally in pairs; on deep reefs or with sea mounts. Feed on benthic animals and fishes. 
Distribution Indo-West Pacific: Red Sea to Celebes, north to Taiwan. Taiwan: Lanyu.  
Utility Commercial fishery and aquarium species.
