Characteristic Body elongate. Snout blunt. Mouth small, barely reaching beyond anterior margin of eye; jaws teeth small, in a single series; palatine, vomerine and tongue toothless. First dorsal fin with IX to XII long and fragile spines; second dorsal fin with 27 to 32 soft rays preceded by I or II spines; anal fin with II-III spines and 26 to 35 soft rays, slightly shorter than soft dorsal fin; pectoral fin not extending beyond orgin of anal fin; caudal fin deeply forked. Area of scales not exending to interorbital space on dorsal surface of head. Adults dark brown to deep purple in color; eye dark blue. Young translucent with brown spots; first dorsal fin dark.
habitats Oceanic species. Associated with jellyfish and floating weed patches. Large adults may be benthic on continental slopes. Feeds on zooplankton and small pelagic fishes 
Distribution Meso- or epipelagic in warm and temperate parts of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. It is occasionally found in coastal waters of Taiwan.
