Characteristic Head large. Snout short. Eyes slight large. Mouth small, oblique and protractile; posterior end of upper jaw distant from anterior margin of eye. Body laterally compressed, dorsal and ventral profile arched. Scales of moderate size; lateral line complete and curved. Dorsal fin rays:XIII,8; anal fin rays:XII,35. Dorsal fin base short; dorsal fin origin at middle between tip of snout and end of caudal peduncle; Anal fin base long, posterior portion broader; pelvic fin small, first soft ray extended like a thin thread and reaches caudal fin origin; caudal fin forked. Two dark spots on middle of side of body and end of caudal peduncle respectively, joined with eye, so-called tri-spot fighting fish in Chinese.
