Characteristic Body moderately elongate and little compressed. Head pointed; eyes often jutting slightly above dorsal profile of head, oriented as much dorsally as laterally. Mouth moderately large, protractile; recurved canine teeth in an outer row at front of jaws. Dorsal fin with IV spines and 20 or 21 soft rays, deeply notched between spinous and soft-rays portions, the soft portion clearly higher than the spinous; anal fin with I spine and 17 soft rays; pectoral fins with 17 or 18 rays; caudal fin slightly rounded. Lateral line scales 57 to 60. Black ocellus above opercle in males. No black blotch at pelvic-fin base, and dark bands on body indistinct. 2 dark stripes on anterior part of caudal fin.
habitats Inhabits both clear lagoon and seaward reefs, in areas of open sand and rubble as well as on rocky surfaces between coral heads. Also in current prone channels. 
Distribution Occurs from the Marshall Islands and Samoa to the western Pacific where it ranges from the Ryukyu Islands to the Great Barrier Reef. It is common in waters around Taiwan. 
Utility No commercial value.
