Characteristic Body short and deep, and strongly compressed. Preorbital bone convex and without strong spines. 1 prominent spines at angle of preopercle. Ventral edge of interopercle serrated. Eye moderately small. Mouth small, terminal, protractile, gape not extending to anterior rim or orbit. Dorsal fin with XIV spines and 15 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 17 soft rays; caudal fin slightly rounded. Color is variable, ranging from brown with golden brown head with a black blotch just behind the head to dark brown or almost black; caudal fin is white or yellowish; anal fin with bluish white band on the edge. Juvenile black to bright blue with pale tail.
habitats Inhabits coral bottoms of channels and over reef slopes at depths of 10 to 60 m. Herbivorous. Often in small loose groups on inner reefs in low patches of brittle corals and coralline algae mix that is shared by damselfishes and small wrasses.  
Distribution East Africa to the Tuamoto Islands, north to southern Japan, south to New South Wales, Australia. Replaced by Centropyge fisheri in the Hawaiian Islands. It is found in southern Taiwanese waters.
