Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 12-13; Anal rays II, 12-14; pectoral rays 16-18; lateral-line scales 14-17; body depth 1.6-1.7 in standard length. Jaws with uniserial teeth; lachrymal and infraorbitals scarcely covered with scales; generally silver grey with dark scale outlines; large black blotch on upper part of pecteral base; upper margin of dorsal fin black and lower half of anal fin black. belly and pelvic fin pale to light yellow.
habitats Inhabits lagoons, reef passages, and the outer reef slopes as solitary individuals or in small groups. Feeds on copepods, amphipods, mysids, fish eggs, crustacean larvae, and a small portion of algae. 
Distribution Distributed in the Indo-West Pacific from Red Sea and eastern Africa to Melanesia, Micronesia and the Samoa Islands; Ryukyu Islands south to Rowley Shoals and Great Barrier Reef. It is found in southern Taiwanese waters.
