Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 13-14; Anal rays II, 13-14; pectoral rays 17; lateral-line scales 16-18; body depth 1.7-1.9 in standard length. The white and curled back lips are distinctive, particularly in large individuals. Juveniles are dull orange while adults are dark brown.
habitats Found usually among beds of branching corals in shallow lagoon reefs, singly or in small groups. Feeds primarily on the polyps of Acropora corals. 
Distribution Distributed in the Indo-West Pacific from Sri Lanka to the Solomon Islands, north to the Philippines, south to Vanuatu and northern Australia; Palau (Belau) in Micronesia. It is very rare and only found in Lanyu, southeastern Taiwan.
