Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 11; Anal rays II, 11-12; pectoral rays 19; lateral-line scales 16-17; body depth 2.0-2.2 in standard length. 3 spinous procurrent rays on upper and lower orgins of caudal fin. Color olivaceous to bluish gray, the scale edges dark brown; a large yellow blotch around the pectoral fin base and base part of the fin, standing out in the natural lights at depths. This species differs from C. weberi by having a thin black preopercular bar and lacking black tips on its caudal fin lobes.
habitats Primarily found along deep outer reef walls. Occurs singly or in small groups in outer reef slopes. Feed on plankton. 
Distribution Western Central Pacific including Indonesia, Philippines, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and northern Great Barrier Reef. Reported from Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. It is very rare and only found in Lyudao, southeastern Taiwan.
