Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 10-11; Anal rays II, 11-12; pectoral rays 18-20; lateral-line scales 16-19; body depth 2.1-2.3 in standard length. 3 spinous procurrent rays on upper and lower orgins of caudal fin. Color variation with size and location. Juveniles slate gray to a brilliant metallic blue with a bright orange-yellow tail. Adults dark gray to black, and in most areas have a white tail.

Distribution Distributed in the Indo-Pacific Ocean from Maldives, Christmas Island, northwestern Australia to the islands of Oceania (excluding the Hawaiian Islands), north to Japan and Taiwan. It is found in southern Taiwanese waters, and Lanyu, southeastern Taiwan.
