Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 12-14; Anal rays II, 12-13; pectoral rays 16-18; lateral-line scales 16-19; Gill rakers 21-24; body depth 2.1-2.3 in standard length. Body moderate to slender. Posterior margin of preopercle smooth. No scales on infraorbitals; cheek with 3 rows of scales. Juveniles are a brilliant blue, but lighter in coloration and not as spectacular as C. cyanea, becoming dull bluish grey with growth.
habitats Occurs among rubble or consolidated reef rock of exposed intertidal reef flats and sandy beaches, subject to mild surge. Also near freshwater run-offs. Occurs in small groups. Feeds mainly on benthic algae. 
Distribution Widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Line and Pitcairn Islands, north to Japan, south to Australia; throughout Micronesia. It is a common species in Taiwan except weastern part. 
Utility No commercial value.
